We ran across the street in the rain, seeking shelter at the bar of an Italian restaurant. A work colleague and I, thirsty after two long and productive days of a team meeting. We each had 30 minutes to kill before carrying on with our respective evenings. The restaurant was old school Italian – just like you’d expect to find in New York City. We claimed two open seats at the heavy wooden bar. I perused the wine menu, becoming immediately animated upon seeing Vermentino on the list and, then, immediately deflated upon realizing that it was only sold by the bottle. Apparently, I said all of this out loud. The bartender replied to my “thoughts”, “Yes, it is only sold by the bottle, but tonight a bottle was accidentally opened so I can sell you a glass”. What!?!? Oh joy! Transported back to Italy in an instant! And, a bit later, because there was only a half glass left in the bottle (I wasn’t the first person that evening excited about the accidental opening) she topped off my glass for free. What a delight!
