Thomas Dolby Invited Me

Well, kind of. Via Twitter. And, I am in Baltimore. And, Enoch Pratt is an easy bike ride down the Maryland Avenue cycle track. And, it’s a lovely warm evening in April. And, Mick O’Shea’s Irish Pub is around the corner for a quick bite of chicken tinga tacos and a glass of wine (yes, wine!) before the show. Sure, I’ll go.

The theater is In the Wilson theater on the third floor of the main library. I skipped up the old wide staircase in the same amount of time it took the packed elevator to make the trip. The theater is small and only 1/3 full.

Thomas Dolby was there. As the the head of the Peabody Conservatory’s Music for New Media program, these were his students performing this piece in public for the first time. He gave the intro.

It was spectacular. At the end, I went up to Thomas Dolby (unusual for me) and thanked him for such as splendid production. I told him that halfway through I realized that I had forgotten there was a live orchestra – the musical score so in tune with the film. He seemed to truly appreciate the compliment.

Oh yeah – an Edgar Allen Poe poem brought to life in a 1928 French black & white film is well what you might expect – scary with a tragic ending. And the musical score hauntingly beautiful.
